    Introduction

Oral and dental problems still remain a public health dilemma worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the oral health status and oral hygiene practice of dental students.

    Methods

80 senior dental students were assigned to the study by using convenience sampling technique. A questionnaire was used to collect the information, which included two sections. The first section asked for demographic information and the second section asked for oral hygiene practice, and was completed by the participants. The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed by the test-retest method and the kappa value was calculated to be 0.65-0.91. The DMFT index was also recorded by clinical examination. The data were analyzed by SPSS software version 20 at the significance level of 0.05.

    Results

In this study, more female participants brushed the lingual and palatal surface of their teeth compared to males; more male participants experienced gingival bleeding during toothbrushing compared to females; more female participants used chlorhexidine mouthwash compared to males. The mean score of oral health status and oral hygiene practice was good (10.61±3.29). The mean score was good in females (11.27±4.68) and was moderate in males (9.83±1.81). A significant difference was found between females and males in terms of oral health status. Although the means of decay, missing and filling were higher in males than females, no significant relation was found between males and females in term of decay, missing and filling. (P=0.57, P=0.88m and P=0.23)

    Conclusion

The findings indicated a relatively good oral health status and oral hygiene practice of dental students in Rasht city. The oral health status and oral hygiene practice of female students were better than males.

    Introduction

Mucogingival surgery is performed to correct defects in the morphology, position, and/or amount of gingiva. Such post-operative complications as bleeding, swelling, and pain have often been documented after mucogingival surgery and are associated with discomfort after surgery. The low-intensity laser has been used to promote analgesia. Low level laser therapy (LLLT) not only accelerates wound healing by acting on the inflammatory process but also improves micro angiogenesis. It has been reported that lasers also reduce pain. This study was aimed to review effect of adjunctive LLLT on gingival graft.

    Materials and Methods

The most recognized databases such as PubMed, Google scholar and Science direct, were searched using keywords Gingival recession; Free gingival graft; Gingival Graft; Low-level laser therapy; Low-level laser; Photo biomodulation therapy during 2009 to 2021. At last, only 8 articles were included in the study.

    Result

3 studies failed to show effect of LLLT on the healing of gingival grafts analgesia. 4 studies could show that LLLT was an effective adjunctive treatment in pain control during early healing of free gingival graft. One study showed that the LLLT could increase the predictability of CAF, with significantly higher percentages of complete root coverage.

    Conclusion

In summary, data demonstrated that the surgery with laser therapy provided clinical advantages in terms of wound healing and postoperative pain. It may help less shrinkage of the graft dimensions and accelerate the rate of epithelialization at the donor site.

    Introduction

Assessment is an integral part of the total evaluation process. Methods of assessment of students’ ability are various. Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) have been widely used for summative assessment and they stimulate students to make a superficial and exam  oriented study. Patient Management Problem(PMP)exams expose the students to a situation  similar to real life and make them solve a clinical problem. The major aim of this study is to compare of these methods of dental students assessment and their correlation with the total grade-point average (GPA).

    Materials and Methods

This descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional study consisted of 55 third-year dental students in endodontics department of Birjand dental school in 2020. The routine MCQ and the PMP tests was designed based on similar objectives, were carried out  simultaneously and implemented in electronic method. The scoring of  tests was calculated out of 100.Resulting data were analyzed using independent two sample t-test and Pearson’s correlation test, (P < 0.05).

    Results

The participantants were %62 females and %37 males. No significant correlation was observed between the mean PMP(P=0.66) and MCQ(P=0.53) scores of female and male students. The t-test showed statistically significant differences in the MCQ and PMP test scores of students (P<0.001).The Pearson’s correlation test showed a significant correlation between the MCQ scores and total GPA(r=0.36 , P=0.006).

    Conclusion

In this study, there is no significant correlation was observed between the PMP scores and total GPA. It indicates that despite high GPA and good practical information, the students were weak at clinical judgment. So using assessing methods such as clinical reasoning tests for dental students can be a good way to measure higher abilities.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma is a rare mixed odontogenic tumor, contains variable amounts of dental hard tissues. It is a controversial lesion. Previously, it was considered as an individual tumor, but recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has defined it as a developing odontoma. It has histologic features of both ameloblastic fibroma and complex odontoma. Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma occurs more frequently in the posterior mandible of children and young adults. This case report presents an extensive developing odontoma or Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma in a 4-year-old boy, positioned in the posterior maxilla; that is a rare region for its occurrence. Facial asymmetry and intraoral swelling were apparent. There was also excessive displacement of permanent first and second molar teeth of the upper jaw to the floor of the orbit. Surgical removal of the lesion and the associated teeth was indicated for treatment. No recurrence was observed after 2 years of follow-up. Management of an expansile ameloblastic fibro-odontoma with maxillary sinus involvement is challenging. Cone beam computed tomograghy (CBCT) is helpful for more detailed investigation.

    Introduction

To evaluate and compare shear bond strength of self-cure and  light-cure composites using a universal bonding system.

    Materials and Methods

Superficial coronal dentin of 62 intact extracted  premolars was exposed and bonding agent (All-Bond Universal) was applied over the  dentin surface according to the manufacturer instruction (self-etch mode). Then  samples were distributed in 2 groups (n=31), and composite cylinders were built using AELITE All-purpose Body Light-cure composite (group I) and MasterDent Self-cure composite (group II). Samples were kept in distilled water at room temperature for one week and then were thermocycled (500 cycles, 5 º C to 55º C). Finally, samples were mounted in acrylic molds and shear bond strength was assessed using a Universal Testing Machine  at the crosshead speed of 0.5 millimeter per minute. Stereomicroscope was used to determine the failure mode. Bond strength data were analyzed using sample t-test and frequencies of failure types analyzed using Chi-square test.

    Results

Mean shear bond strength in group I (34 ± 3.56Mpa) was higher than group II (32±3.24Mpa). In addition, the prevalence of adhesive failure in group II (74.2%) was higher than group I (67.7%). However, these differences were not statistically significant.

    Conclusion

Our findings showed that the application of All-Bond Universal  followed by a self-cured composite without using a separate self-cure activator on  dentin, provides bond strength values comparable to that of a light-cured composite.

A notable proportion of class II population suffer from excessive vertical maxillary growth which leads to subsequent backward rotation of mandible. Excessive tooth show at rest and on smile are the associated presentation of this group.we report treatment results of this subdivision of class II patients, treated by high pull headgears attached to maxillary acrylic splints with posterior bite-blocks.in all cases, maxillary vertical & sagittal growth had been controlled and simultaneous vertical mandibular growth contributed to improvement of facial profile, incisor show, lip and mentalis muscle function.considering every aspect of an individual’s growth pattern is an inevitable step in treatment planning in orthopedic patients, as it may play a direct role in the treatment plan and mechanotherapy. Comprehensive diagnosis and a customized treatment plan is the key to clinical success.
